This unique, rugged, challenging, and beautiful place first inspired my commitment to backpack fly fishing, and it is still draws me again and again. Over the past thirty years, Kathy and I have made the long trek north to Cape Breton, first before we had children, and most recently on our sixth trip with our older son Zach as principle photographer. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is a land of contrasts. The ocean meets the edges of the highlands, and small fresh water streams flow directly into the sea. French speaking Acadians live side by side with people of Scottish ancestry, and names like Cheticamp and Grand Anse contrast with those such as McIntosh Brook and Mackenzie River.
